Dr. Michael Law
Dr. Michael Law is the recipient of the inaugural Aaka Pande and Sumit Majumdar Memorial Award from the Division of Health Policy and Insurance Research (HPI) of the Harvard School of Medicine.
Dr. Law, associate professor in the faculty of medicine’s school of population and public health and director of the Center for Health Services and Policy Research, was presented with the award for his research on the impact of a household-level deductible on prescription drug use among lower-income adults.
His study ultimately demonstrated that deductibles had a significant impact on drug use for lower-income populations in British Columbia’s (B.C.) Fair PharmaCare program.
“These findings helped inform major changes to the B.C. Fair Pharmacare program implemented earlier this year,” notes Dr. Law, who also holds the Canada Research Chair in Access to Medicines.
The award recognizes the talents of outstanding research fellows who are making significant contributions to constructive health policy dialogue through exceptional papers, highly regarded blogs or op-eds. The inaugural award was also established to honour the legacy and lives of former HPI fellows of Drs. Pande and Majumdar. Dr. Law was a colleague and a mentee of Dr. Majumdar.
“To be given an honor in the name of these two incredible people is very humbling indeed,” said Dr. Law. “The paper that I submitted for the award was the final one I wrote with Dr. Majumdar before he passed away. He was a great friend, collaborator, and mentor. While I didn’t have the chance to work with Dr. Pande, I was always impressed by her work and enjoyed our interactions when our paths crossed.”
