Students

Deadline: February 15, 2024 [4:00 pm PST]. Applications now closed.

Eligibility

  • The competition is only open to currently registered UBC undergraduate students.
  • MD undergraduate students must be registered in Yr 1 or Yr 3 of the UBC MD Undergraduate Program (i.e. MD 2025 or MD 2027 students for summer 2024) at the time of application.
  • Non MD undergraduate students must be registered in a direct-entry UBC undergraduate program at the time of application (the summer studentship can be held immediately after graduation). Due to UBC award regulations, unclassified students are not eligible.
  • Dentistry students, nursing and non-UBC students are not eligible for the FoM SSRP.
  • All students must be in good academic standing and  must also have a minimum GPA/rank of 75% (see adjudication criteria for clarification).
  • MD and non-MD students may have different scheduling restrictions. Students and supervisors are encouraged to discuss project expectations, schedules and timelines in advance of agreeing to work together.  For summer 2024 Yr 3 MD students have a short summer break and thus we will be offering special 4 week FoM SSRP awards to this cohort only. Note that this year’s FoM SSRP funding period must occur between June 1-August 31, 2024; however, the 8 (or 4 if applicable) weeks of funding need not be consecutive.
  • Those that have received a FoM SSRP summer studentship in the past may re-apply. Funding is not guaranteed, even if you have been awarded in the past. All applications are subject to the same adjudication process.

Application Process

FoM SSRP Application packages must be submitted by a student-supervisor team as one application. The FoM SSRP office does not directly match students with supervisors and thus students are responsible for finding a supervisor well in advance of the application deadline.

Step 1 – Find a Supervisor

  • Students may contact a supervisor directly to discuss available opportunities, or review the available FoM SSRP projects online and then contact the supervisor to set up an interview.
  • Students are encouraged to seek out a potential supervisor directly and not only apply to projects posted on the FoM SSRP website – less than 25% of FoM SSRP projects are posted on the website and most applications are submitted by student supervisor teams who connect through other methods, namely student initiated contact.
  • Students seeking a FoM SSRP supervisor are encouraged to visit the Find a Supervisor page.
  • A list of previously funded FoM SSRP projects is available here.
  • Some supervisors/projects may only be suitable for students who are available for a continuous 8-week period and/or a specific portion of the summer. For this reason students with restricted or uncertain schedules should discuss their situation with potential supervisors prior to agreeing to work together. This ensures that the potential FoM SSRP schedules are agreeable to both parties.

Step 2 – Complete your application package

  • Once you and your potential supervisor have agreed to apply for the program as a team the two of you will work together to complete and submit one application.
  • Note that each student may only submit one FoM SSRP application. Multiple applications naming the same student partner will be disqualified. The application limit also applies to supervisors and thus supervisors can only be named as a primary supervisor on one application with one student partner.
  • MD students must be in good standing. MD student grades will not be included in the evaluation process.
  • Students are no longer required to submit transcripts. Student grades will still be used in the evaluation process for non-MD students, but they will be obtained internally. The Application Form asks applicants to give consent for their grades to be accessed. For details on how grades will be used, please see the Adjudication page. Do not include letters of reference, CVs or any additional documentation with your application.

DEADLINE: A complete application must be submitted via the online application system by February 15, 2024 at 4:00PM PST. Applications now closed.

Step 3A – If your application is not successful:

  • Applicants will be contacted in early May with the results of the adjudication process. Unfortunately, we are generally unable to confirm FoM SSRP placements any earlier.*
  • Unfortunately, due to limited funding, many excellent FoM SSRP projects are unable to be funded each year. On average, the program is only able to fund ~50% of the applications it receives. Students are encouraged to discuss what will happen if their application is not successful with their potential supervisor well in advance of the application period.

Step 3B – If your application is successful:

  • Applicants will be contacted in early May with the results of the adjudication process. Unfortunately, we are generally unable to confirm FoM SSRP placements any earlier.*
  • Successful applicants will receive their stipend via the Student Services Centre (SSC).
  • Students will be required to complete a brief project summary report and an online evaluation after the completion of their studentship. Students receiving funding from specific sources may also be required to complete additional documentation required by the funding agency. Additional details will be sent to successful applicants via email.

*Students with special circumstances, such as multiple award offers, are encouraged to contact us.
